Planting Outdoors? Start With Your Site

Most people arrive with a patch of yard that has beaten them. Light and moisture decide which moss will take. Find your conditions below.

Carpet moss in deep shade beside a wall

Deep shade, under trees

Sheet and carpet moss are the ground cover here. Fern moss suits the same shade where the ground stays moist.

Shade Moss for Sale
Mood moss in a shaded garden bed

Dappled light, part shade

Cushion, haircap and spoon leaved moss all suit broken light under a canopy, and mood moss holds its color there too.

Shade Moss for Sale
Sun moss growing in an open, sunny garden

Open sun, dry and exposed

Full Sun Moss (Racomitrium) lays like turf on backing. Sun Moss (Bryum) fits joints and crevices. Both want excellent drainage.

Sun Moss for Sale
Star moss, Aulacomnium, in wet ground

Wet, low lying or pooling

Star moss and turf carpet are wet site species. They belong in rain gardens, bioswales and stream margins.

Moss for Rain Gardens
Bryum moss filling the joints between pavers

Between pavers and stone

Sun Moss (Bryum) for sunny joints, sheet moss for shaded ones. Pack the joint with soil first.

How Much Moss Do I Need?

For outdoor planting, most gardens take between 25 and 100 square feet. A shaded strip beside a path, the bare ground under a maple, the corner where grass gave up. Terrarium builds start at a quarter of a square foot.

Under 10 square feet

A feature. A container, a rock, the base of a tree.

25 to 100 square feet

A shaded bed or a lawn patch. This is the size most of our customers order.

250 square feet and above

A full lawn replacement. Volume pricing applies and we will work out quantities with you.

Skip the math — the calculators match species to your site, split the order into the cheapest size combination at live shop prices, and add everything to your cart in one click.

Where Our Moss Comes From

Three ways, and we will tell you which one your order came from.

Full Sun Moss cultivated on geotextile backing

Cultivated

Full Sun Moss, Racomitrium canescens, is cultivated on geotextile backing. It arrives as an even mat and cuts to any shape.
Haircap moss gathered from a managed private site

Responsibly sourced

Most species are gathered from managed private sites, with the landowner’s permission, on a rotation that lets each site recover.
Tree apron moss lifted from land scheduled for clearing

Rescued

Where land is scheduled for clearing, we lift the moss before the machines arrive. It would otherwise be destroyed.

No pesticides, no herbicides and no synthetic chemicals on any of it.

What Our Customers Say

Rated 4.9 out of 5 across 63 reviews.

Anne Kate

I am so glad I found this. I’ve been struggling for years because my lawn is very shaded and there is a lot of erosion. A friend told me about moss and now I have a beautiful moss lawn.

Zack T.

I planted a moss lawn a year ago and it’s beautiful. I was a bit anxious because it was quite an investment but they helped me out so well and it turned out great!

Jamie O.

My landscaper recommended ordering the moss here for my yard and it’s beautiful. Super lush, no bugs, and a great service.

Ronald D.

Quick delivery and they are very helpful. The aftercare is amazing because I placed an order and I had a lot of questions about preparing my yard and they answered all my questions.

Questions We Get Asked Most

Where can I buy live moss?

Here. We cut every order fresh at our Pennsylvania facility and ship nationwide, year round. Browse moss plants for sale by species and size, or use the conditions above to narrow it down.

Will it look dead when it arrives?

It may look dry, curled and dull. That is normal. Moss dries out to survive drought and can hold that state for months, then greens again within minutes of watering. Only tan, brittle moss is a concern. Mist it on arrival and plant within a day or two.

How do I grow moss between pavers?

Pack the joint with soil first. Moss will not hold in loose sand or stone dust. Press each piece down firmly so the base meets the soil with no air pockets. Use Sun Moss (Bryum) for sunny joints and sheet moss for shaded ones.

Does moss grow in shade?

Most of it only grows in shade. Ten of the twelve species we carry want shade of some kind: sheet, carpet, mood and fern for the deepest ground, cushion, tree apron, spoon leaved and haircap for dappled light, and star and turf carpet where the shade is also wet. The only exceptions are Sun Moss (Bryum) and Full Sun Moss (Racomitrium), the two that tolerate open sun.

How long before it covers the ground?

Plant sections half an inch apart and they knit into continuous cover over six to twelve months. For cover straight away, order about ninety five percent of the area you want covered.

When is the best time to plant moss?

Spring and autumn are easiest, when the ground stays damp on its own. Summer works if you can keep it lightly moist through the first few weeks. Moss does not go dormant in winter the way grass does, so an autumn planting will settle quietly and be ready by spring.

How do I water it?

Mist, do not soak. Let it dry between waterings. Moss is healthiest alternating dry and moist. Use filtered, distilled or rainwater, because the chlorine in untreated tap water is hard on it. Water in the morning for the first three months.

Can I grow moss from spores instead?

Yes, and it is the cheaper way to cover a large area slowly. Moss has no seeds, so what you are looking for is spores and fragments. Our moss seeds and spores page explains the difference, and our moss milkshakes are a blend of fragments you pour or paint onto soil, stone or wood. Expect mold to appear before moss does. That is normal and it passes.

Which moss should I choose if I am not sure?

Start with a live moss sample box. Three species, labeled, so you can see which one takes in your conditions before committing to a full order. Every species we carry is set out in the moss species guide, with the light, moisture and substrate each one needs.
